Brindaban with Friend Sridam |
Brindaban with Villagers |
Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. This old age saying has remained through the entire journey of human polity. Still, there appear to be times when a subtle reminder of this saying becomes necessary for the benefit of common people. KRISHNAPURER RUPKATHA, a black comedy, attempts to do the same. With the help of fantasy, fun, magic and cruel realism, this play tries to emphases that it is not the inherent vice of power, but the lack of its proper realization and utilization that gives power its bad name.
Brindaban, an honest milkman of Krishnapur, toil hard to keep the pot boiling.A man of principles and values, he denounces dishonest means to make profit, and thus remains poor. Out of utter desperation, he lets his son go astray and live a wealthier life. At this juncture, Jataibaba, the local guru, comes to the rich and powerful that has caused her misery. At Jataibaba's insistance, Brindaban takes Kamala home. Jataibaba, with his magical powers, gives back Kamala her lost Vigour. With the blessings of the Goddess of Wealth, Brindaban and his friends are liberated from all miseries. Dipendranath, local tyrant landlord, is ousted from the power, and the power of the common honest man is established.
As the play progresses, the power of common man gradually gets concentrated to the power of Brindaban, and Krishnapur witnesses the birth of a new Dipendranath in a new guise. The misery of Kamala returns.
